Sharon's
Tatted Headpiece

This Is The Headpiece
I Tatted For My Veil.
There is a combination of flowers and butterflies both with and without beads and pearls. The carnations are an adaptation of a pattern from The Tatter's Treasure Chest edited by Mary Carolyn Waldrep and the butterfly is adapted from Monica Hahn's book Christmas Angels and other Tatting Patterns.
The smaller flowers used as fill-ins are my own invention. This was done in size 40 crochet cotton with the exception of the two small butterflys at the front which were done in Mettler's silk finish sewing thread. The beaded flower at the front is also my design. The large butterflys were suspended on heavy nylon thread so they could "fly".

  Detail of Back
The back has two small flowers with beaded centers surmounted by a "flying" butterfly. These are flanked by the original carnation pattern, which worked up smaller than I wanted, so I added an extra row with beads and pearls.

  Detail of Front
The central five pointed motif is surmounted by
the only fine tatting on the whole piece. The two
small butterflys are the same pattern but done in a
much finer thread.

  Detail of Large Carnation
There are 48 pearls alternated with 48 clear seed beads. It took well over an hour just to load all the beads onto the ball thread and over 3 days to complete each one. I would have done the entire headpiece with these flowers if I'd had the time.

  Side view.
You can see the silk flowers between the tatted ones. I started out to do a simple comb but it went from a simple "just us and the minister" to a full blown wedding overnight and I had less than a month to send out invitations make all the usual arrangements and tat a headpiece large enough to support a proper veil. The silk flowers both added variety and saved me hours of work. The small beaded flowers are a miniature version of the large carnation that supported the veil in the back. Was it any wonder I fell asleep most nights while tatting?

  Detail of Large Butterfly.
In addition to adorning the headpiece,
these little guys were sent out with
our thank you notes as a small keepsake

This is one of the few pictures that shows the headpiece with any detail. It also shows the handsome hunk I married.
