The ChurchReg Family Tree function will allow you to keep track of Member's families helpful both in maintaining contact with members and in planning programs.

OPENING THE FAMILY TREE DIALOG
To open the Family Tree dialog window click on TREE in the main ChurchReg menu. If you have previously entered Family Tree data, the dialog window appears as shown in Fig.1; otherwise the Family Tree listing and entry boxes are all empty.

The program automatically loads the last tree file that you accessed - if you select Remember Last File in the File menu. You can also select FILE | OPEN in the FILE menu to open a specific Family Tree file.

THE FIRST ENTRY
When you first begin and there are no entries, the words NEW NAME appear at the top of the Tree Window at the right. On the left side are itemized data fields for address, home and work telephone number, e-mail address, website, birth date and anniversary date plus miscellaneous fields for baptismal dates and other important events.

IMPORTING MEMBER NAMES
Since you should already have a list of names in the Member records, you can begin by transferring all of this information into the Tree. From the FILE menu, select IMPORT ALL MEMBERS.

Once all Member names have been imported to Family Tree, you will need to create branches from each Member identifying each person's name followed by the names of their children. An example is shown below in Fig. 2.

Fig. 2 - Family Tree Branches

CHANGING A LABEL NAME
After importing Church Member names your Tree list will consist of a single column of names. Each name will have a [+] sign beside it. When you click on the [+] sign it changes to a [-] sign and a branch opens below with the same name (as shown below).

You cannot input data in any of the 17 edit boxes at the left unless the Tree highlight is below a main label. Main labels have a [+] or [-] sign. That is the reason the name is needed again below the main label.

If the main label has 2 names, for example ROBERT & SHARON BRIGGS you need to create a single name label for each person. For example one label for ROBERT BRIGGS and one label for SHARON BRIGGS below the main label entitled ROBERT & SHARON BRIGGS.

To change the secondary label name highlight the label and press F2or select INSERT | CHANGE NAME from the menu. Type in a single name (erasing the previous names) and then press ENTER.

INSERTING ANOTHER LABEL
To create a second label for the second person, move the highlight to the first person's name (not the main label name) then press INSERT or select INSERT | PRIMARY NAME from the menu. When you do, you will notice that a new label appears at the top of the list with the title NEW NAME.

Select the NEW NAME and press F2 to change the name from NEW NAME to the name of the second person.

If Robert & Sharon Briggs have any children you will need to insert a 3rd label entitled CHILDREN. To do so, highlight the last person's name then press INSERT or select INSERT | PRIMARY NAME from the menu. Change the Label title from NEW NAME to CHILDREN by highlighting the label and pressing F2 as explained.

INSERTING A CHILD LABEL
On the label entitled CHILDREN, press CTRL+INSERT or select INSERT | SECONDARY NAME from the menu. When you do, you will notice that the name now has a PLUS sign beside it and below and to the right there is a branch labelled NEW NAME.

Change the label name from NEW NAME to the name of their first child, for example PAUL. If Paul has a wife and children then change the label NEW NAME to PAUL & SHEILA BRIGGS as an example, and insert 2 more labels below with the names PAUL BRIGGS and SHEILA BRIGGS followed by a 3rd label entitled CHILDREN for their children.

Follow this procedure for each family member and for each, enter their name, address, phone, email, birthday, etc in the entry boxes at the left side of the screen. Remember that you will not be able to enter data in these entry boxes when the tree highlight is beside [+] or [-] sign in the list.

SAVE BEFORE PROCEEDING
If you have entered a large amount of data you should SAVE before proceeding further to be sure the data is not lost (power outage etc). To save, press CTRL+S or select FILE | SAVE from the menu. If it is a new file you will be asked for a file name. Choose a name that relates to the family tree, for example CHURCH TREE or BRIGGS FAMILY etc. The File extension name is always .bin example: Family Tree.bin.

COPY, DELETE, PASTE TREE NAMES
Once you have a listing of family tree names you can Cut, Copy or Paste names into different tree positions. The clipboard is not used for this feature. Instead since the tree data must also link the information from all 17 edit boxes for each person, a temporary disk file is used to hold cut or copied tree information.

When the information is pasted into the tree at a different location the program updates each entry for the new position. Be sure to paste any data you intend to keep before exiting otherwise the data will be lost. Temporary files are erased when you exit the Tree function.

To Cut, Copy, or Paste Tree items use the menu selections under the Edit menu or right-click the mouse over the tree list for a popup menu.

To reload the original family tree file you can use REFRESH found under the VIEW menu or press F5.

ENTERING MEMBER DETAILS
On the left side of the window are 17 edit fields used to keep track of details related to the currently selected Member in the Tree List.

Standard Cut & Paste features apply to each of the edit boxes. In the Tree list you can press F2 to open a Member name then press CTRL+C to copy the name to the clipboard. Close the Tree Edit box by pressing ENTER then paste the name from the clipboard into the Name box at the top left of the window. Of course you can just type in a name instead of using Cut & Paste.

COPYING MEMBER DETAILS
To quickly Cut or Copy text from one or more of the 17 edit boxes, hold down the SHIFT key while pressing the up or down arrow keys to select one or more boxes or press CTRL+A to select ALL boxes. You can also hold the RIGHT mouse button down to select one or more boxes.

When you release CTRL or release the right mouse button, a popup window appears with a selection to cut, copy, or select all to the clipboard. Once copied to the clipboard you can go to another Member and select PASTE. This saves retyping of duplicate information, such as addresses, phone numbers, etc.

CHANGING CHARACTER CASE
To quickly change the character case of text you type, select and highlight the text then press CTRL+Q to toggle between upper case, sentence case, and lower case characters. Case change does not work unless the text has been highlighted and case change applies only to the current edit box.

ENTERING DATE FIELDS
In edit boxes where a date is required, you can press F6 or select EDIT | DATE in the menu and today's date is pasted into the box. This is useful if you learn it is someone's birthday today or other event on today's date.

FAMILY TREE PICTURES
Each Tree Member can display a picture of the person. First obtain a picture either from a scanned photograph or digital camera. The picture file format must be a bitmap (.bmp) image and the size will automatically be stretched or shrunk to fit the area covering the first 9 edit boxes at the left of the window as shown below in Fig.2 at the beginning of this section.

In the menu you will notice the selection entitled PICTURE . The Picture selection will be disabled when the tree highlight is over an item that has a [+] or [-] sign. The only way to enable the PICTURE menu selection is to move the Tree highlight off of the [+] or [-] selection.

Once the PICTURE menu selection is enabled, click on it and then choose SELECT PICTURE or press F10. A dialog window opens as shown below in Fig. 4.

In the future you can return to the Picture List and move the highlight to another selection. If you want to remove a picture filename from the list click the REMOVE button.

PICTURE ON SELECT
If you want to be able to move the highlight up or down the Tree list and view each person's picture as you scroll through the list, select PICTURE ON SELECT from the FILE menu.

While the picture is being displayed, the edit boxes at the left are covered. As soon as you move the mouse pointer over the picture or press ESC the picture will disappear.

SEARCHING FOR INFORMATION
To search for information from any Tree Member including detailed information in the edit fields, use the Search function. When you click on SEARCH | FIND in the menu, the cursor will jump to the Search box at the bottom right side of the window. You can also press CTRL+F to go to the Search box.

Type in your search text in the Search box followed by pressing ENTER. If found - the text will flash on the screen to signal it's location. To continue a search, press F3 or select SEARCH | FIND NEXT from the menu. When the search reaches the end of all records it will continue from the beginning of the records.

EXPANDING OR COLLAPSING THE TREE
To Expand or Collapse the entire tree list, press F8 or select VIEW | EXPAND ALL from the menu. You can also click on OPEN TREE or CLOSE TREE at the bottom right corner of the Tree window.

To Expand or Collapse the current item in the list, press F7 or select VIEW | EXPAND CURRENT from the menu.

To dial a phone number found in one of the 17 edit boxes at the left - left click the edit box that has the phone number then select PHONE from the menu. The Phone Dialer pops up with the phone number inserted as the number to dial.

To send email using the email address found in one of the 17 edit boxes- left click the edit box that has the email address then select FILE | SEND EMAIL from the menu or press CTRL+E.

PRINTING THE FAMILY TREE
To Print the Family Tree select PRINT | FAMILY TREE LISTING from the FILE menu or press CTRL+P. A listing similar to the Tree window will be printed. Printing does not include the details from the 17 edit boxes. To print a detailed listing of Family Tree entries including all information from the 17 edit boxes and a thumbnail colour picture, select PRINT | FAMILY TREE DETAILED INFO from the FILE menu.

From the Family Tree Print dialog, you can select to print a single individual or a selection of Family Tree entries and also select a range of page numbers to print as shown in Fig. 6 below.
